Coiled Form: Basketry to Sculpture

Coiling is one of the oldest fiber construction techniques, traditionally used in basketry. This workshop explores how the same stitched coil structure can move beyond the basket to create sculptural form.

Students will begin by learning foundational coiling methods used in basketry, focusing on how coils are built, stitched, and shaped. Once the basic structure is established, we will experiment with ways the form can expand beyond functional containers.

Through guided demonstrations and hands-on exploration, participants will explore scale, rhythm, and shaping strategies that allow the coil to grow upward and outward in organic, freeform expression. This class is designed for anyone curious about fiber as a sculptural material.
